Scars Above is a challenging sci-fi third-person action adventure shooter combining the rewarding feel of overcoming difficulty with a compelling and intricate story, set in a mysterious alien world to explore.

After we played the DEMO version of game, we spoke with the creators of Scars Above (Mad Head Games), and you can read the entire interview below.

Your game picked up a lot of hype during its production. Does it add any pressure to your team?

Well, every time you make something for an audience, there is a certain amount of pressure involved. That said, we do not feel the pressure apart from the pressure we make for ourselves. We were delighted to have an overall positive reaction and hype from people seeing the game announced and also from people playing the demo at Gamescom and Steam Next Fest.

How did you get the idea to create a TPS Sci-Fi Adventure Shooter?

It’s basically a result of several prototypes that we did before we actually started developing the game. We wanted to make a game with a defined protagonist and solid sci-fi story. Third Person genre was something that helped us set the whole thing in a way that we can have engaging gameplay, showcase the main protagonist and also tell a story.

Do you have any plans for the future in regards to Scars Above? A sequel or a bigger DLC?

I cannot comment on this other than to say that we first need to see how the game will be received by the audience once it’s launched. We would like to tell more stories in the same universe, but only future will tell.

Were there any bigger obstacles you had to traverse through during the production?

Every game developer in every game has obstacles to overcome, big or small. Our main challenge with making this game is that we also want to become better developers ourselves while doing it. So team growth, studio organisation, learning new technologies and applying the knowledge was the main obstacle. Other than that we did have a lot of fun making it.

Will there be any mysteries or easter eggs that players will have to find themselves during the course of the game?

The game story and setting is a mystery in itself. The story is all about uncovering mysteries and facing overwhelming odds with the help of knowledge and science. As for easter eggs… well there would not be much fun in discovering if I said it here 🙂

Is this your most challenging project to date? If not, which one was it?

You could say that. But it was also the project that we were most ready for in terms of team skill set and accumulated experience in video game development.

Were there any games that served as an inspiration to Scars Above?

We in Mad Head Games are gamers. As such we play a lot of games and get inspired left and right. We mainly looked at games like Remnant From the Ashes, Resident Evil series, Alien Isolation, Destiny, Horizon series etc.

Were there any funny incidents during the production? Some interesting glitches or bugs?

When you are in the middle of development there are lot of things that go wrong 🙂 I think one of the funniest things I’ve seen is when we accidentally made a particle effect that instead of some regular steam particles actually spawns Goliaths, which is a type of enemy that we have.. So essentially it looked like a fountain that spews creatures.

Can you reveal the release date of the game?

I cannot reveal the exact date but it should come out sometimes in Q1 of 2023.
